EPA report estimates that about 30 million Americans a year
are drinking from public water systems that violate one or more
health standards. Many cities and towns still use water-cleaning
technology that dates back to World War I*. "The drinking
water supply in this country is definitely getting worse, and
we're only beginning to uncover the problem areas," says
Erik Olson, senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense
Council (NRDC) in Washington, D.C.
